The Yes and the Definitely No! When Planting
Make sure wherever you plant them and I cannot stress this enough... do not plant them where you have sprayed chemicals containing Picloram, Triclopyr, Aminopyralid, Metsulfuron etc. Jerusalem artichokes are extremely hardy but do not like chemical residue.
You do not need to rip up a whole paddock to plant them. Dig a hole and put them in, they will hydraulic the soil as they grow, breaking it up.
You can use synthetic fert or organic (personal preference) but the more you feed them the bigger they yield, in also saying that they will scavenge any available nutrients in the soil. So, to save money you could take the risk and see how they go (that liability is on you).
Each bulb can be cut into multiple plants, as long as you leave growing tips per piece. The closer you space them the thinner the stalks. Each plant does grow very large in width and height, so for optimal growing you could plant them at least 24 inches apart (bigger the better).
Be wary of snail and slug damage, use control methods to stop this. Bulbs will still come away again even if they look like they are destroyed.
Once they are away snails and slugs are no longer an issue to worry about.
